Seems the phablet war is not going to end pretty soon. Most of the smartphone manufacturers are focusing on creating a large screen device lineup in their product portfolio.

After the success of Samsung Galaxy Note, Samsung eyed the budget market with the launch of Galaxy Grand with premium features which attracted a lot of buyers in the market. To compete, Sony also came up with MediaTek powered phablet, Sony Xperia C, to cater the same consumer segment. Sony Xperia C is certainly going to give stiff competition to Samsung Galaxy Grand.

Both are the budget phablets from international brands available in an affordable price range. Here is our first hand comparison of both the devices for consumers looking to buy any of the two.

Design & Build Quality

Samsung Galaxy Grand is sharing almost same looking design with the previous phones in the Galaxy Series. It is a well-designed phone with glossy looking materials and sturdy build quality. On the other hand Sony Xperia C looks almost same to the typical Sony smartphones in the market.


Both of the devices are sharing good design and build quality. However, Sony Xperia C looks a bit stylish comparing to the Samsung Galaxy Grand and it surely impresses the youth buyers in the market.


Samsung Galaxy Grand comes with a 5inch TFT LCD capacitive touch screen display with 480×800 pixels resolution. Sony Xperia C also offers the same 5inth capacitive touch screen display but it gives you better 960×540 pixels resolution comparing to the Samsung Galaxy Grand. Due to higher resolution, Sony Xperia C certainly provides a better quality media viewing experience.

UI and Camera

Samsung Galaxy Grand is running on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system and company has enhanced its user interface by using its own custom TouchWiz UI. On the other hand Sony Xperia C is running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean latest OS version and comes with Sony’s TimeScape UI. Both of these devices come with smooth Software Interface experience but Sony Xperia C is having advantage of running latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS.


Both of the devices capture satisfying photos with primary 8MP camera on the back. However, Samsung Galaxy Grand comes with better 2MP front shooter comparing to Sony Xperia C’s only 0.3MP camera.

Performance features

Samsung has powered the Galaxy Grand with 1.2GHz dual core processor as well as with 1GB of RAM memory. While, Sony Xperia C is powered by a 1.2GHz quad core processor along with 1GB of RAM and it surely gives you better performance over the Samsung Galaxy Grand.

Quad core processor in the Sony Xperia C provides smooth operations while operating the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean software interface. Something worth notifying here is that the Sony Xperia C is powered by Mediatek processor which powers most of the Indo-china clad mobile phones.

Samsung Galaxy Grand vs. Sony Xperia C- Verdict

Samsung Galaxy Grand has ruled the mid-ranged phablet segment for a long time but now Sony Xperia C is going to give it a tough competition because of its powerful features in the mid-range segment. Sony Xperia C is better than Samsung Galaxy Grand in many aspects including processor, resolution, latest Android OS version and powerful battery.

However, Sony didn’t yet reveal the price of the phone in the market but it is expected to be priced quite similar to the current price of the Samsung Galaxy Grand.
