Google Officially Launches Google Drive Cloud Storage Service

You Are Here

Google Drive is finally available. You can enable this new Google service now with this link. As expected Google Drive offers 5 GB of free disk space, for Mac, Windows and Android. IOS version of Google Drive should also be offered soon.

Google Drive service will integrate with Google Docs and will allow you to access files from anywhere and collaborate on documents with colleagues.

As per official blog :

Today, we’re introducing Google Drive—a place where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff. Whether you’re working with a friend on a joint research project, planning a wedding with your fiancé or tracking a budget with roommates, you can do it in Drive. You can upload and access all of your files, including videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs and beyond.

After waiting for some years, Google has finally unveiled its cloud storage system, for sharing and data synchronization. Google Drive is actually a new version that offers some new documents and applications for Windows, Mac and Android that allow synchronize it.

What has changed on Google Drive?

  • The “Home” menu has been replaced by “My Drive”
  • Google drops the Collection name and now uses the term directory.
  • A new menu in the left column, which is called “Share with me” you will quickly see all files that have been shared with you.
  • The activity menu will display the latest activities that have been saved to your account

Mac and Windows Application

As I mentioned, Google offers Mac and Windows clients that can synchronize your data. These applications can be installed quickly and do not offer many customization options. For version 1, these applications are very stable and work very well. To synchronize files that have been shared with you, add them to the folder “My Drive”. One of the negatives of the Google Drive is that it is impossible to simultaneously connect to more than one account.

Google Drive comes with 5 gigabytes of free space

Google offers free 5 gigabytes, but in exchange for the acquisition of additional disk space now costs more expensive. For example, Google offered 80 gigabytes for $20 but now you can get 100GB for $5 per month or $60 per year.

How to activate Google Drive?

You can enable Google Drive by clicking this link: drive.google.com/start . If you have a Google Apps account, you must ensure that you have turned on the “Rapid Release”. You will find this option in the interface of Google Apps administrator under “Domain settings”.

Conclusion

In summary, this new service, Google Drive is very effective. It is anticipated that it will evolve over the coming months, but already it is essential in my opinion if you already use Google Docs, Gmail or Picasa. Note, however, the absence of IOS and Linux versions of Google Drive. As an alternative I suggest you try Microsoft Skydrive

If this feature is still not available for you, then wait for sometime as this features is still rolling out, if you want to know when your Google drive will be ready then click here, and Google team will notify you once your drive is ready.
