Social Networking

Search engines look at social networking sites and SEO companies understand the value of ensuring their pages on these are optimised just as well as their commercial sites.

Facebook

It goes without saying that Facebook is a massive boon to SEO. There’s no need to go into depth about the importance of this networking site. It has over 1 billion users and connects family, friends, groups and businesses via video, images and text. Although links from Facebook are nofollowed, the site ranks really well, meaning you can often occupy spots one and two for a particular search query.

Twitter

Used by millions, this micro blogging service is designed perfectly for the internet demographic; it’s instant and easily digestible. Hashtags are the keywords on twitter and linking can be done effectively and quickly. On top of this, experts believe there may be a positive correlation between links to a site and tweets of that URL. Which is good news for search engine optimisation.

LinkedIn

Think of this like a business version of Facebook. LinkedIn is a professional networking site that many of the top companies and brands use. It’s an important site to be optimised on because the influence of some can affect many. Over 120 million members with the majority (if not all) being trusted contacts that can help you network within a large net of professionals.

With almost 1 billion searches monthly, Google is the most popular search engine by some degree. So using Google+ is just common sense. There are 400 million users with over 100 being active on a monthly basis. You can see it as a competitor to Facebook, or you can see it as an excellent SEO opportunity to use both.

In addition to this Google is beginning to integrate their social site into the search engine results, meaning an increased CTR. In turn this means you may no longer need to rank position one to see the most traffic to your site.

Pinterest

A relatively new social networking site. Pinterest began in 2009 but already has 25 million users. An image based site, the possibility to optimise thousands of these images through tagging, descriptions and metadata is astounding. Internet users love visual stimulus, so it’s a site that you can’t ignore. Read our complete guide to Pinterest.

YouTube

Keeping with the visual aspect, YouTube utilises video and as such has over 800 million users each month. 100 million users take social action on YouTube each week via comments, searches and sharing. Optimising your content for this site will provide an excellent base for your SEO and don’t forget that in addition to being great for social, YouTube is the world second largest search engine.

Social networking areas are where the majority of web users will spend time on, so if you really want to get heard, then you need to choose the right stadiums. Do you know more such sites which you think are best for SEO? Share with us via comments below.
