The Top 5 Sites To Find Independent Films Online

You Are Here

Here is the list of 5 Sites To Find Independent Films Online. There’s more to streaming movie sites than the triad of Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube.

If you’re the adventurous type and enjoy exploring the world of film beyond the mainstream, there are several sites dedicated solely to offering independent films. They range from free streaming sites to pay-per-view and subscription services.

Watch For Free

Even in the realm of independent cinema, don’t expect to find well-known titles on sites that offer free movies streaming on its site. But there’s always the possibility of discovering new favorites.

1. IndieMoviesOnline

On IndieMoviesOnline, you’ll find a few familiar titles with recognizable actors, such as 101 Reykjavik with Spanish film star Victoria Abril, the 1968 original Night of the Living Dead, and Dario Argento’s 1998 version of Phantom of the Opera starring Julian Sands.

101 Reykjavik

For the most part, though, you’ll find modern-day grindhouse fare like Run! Bitch Run! as well as a selection of documentaries and shorts. On the bright side, the movies are commercial free. The site also includes film news and reviews.

2. Inmoo

Inmoo also leans heavily toward B-grade thrills, such as Hack, starring Danica McKellar (best known as Winnie on The Wonder Years), and The Tripper, directed by David Arquette and starring Lukas Haas and Paul (Pee-Wee Herman) Reubens. After an initial brief ad, movies play commercial-free.

Pay-Per-View Options

3. Sundance Now

If you’re looking for more familiar independent films — you know, ones that have actually played in theaters — you’ll have to pony up a few bucks. Sundance Now offers a selection of contemporary and classic independent films.

on-the-road

There’s recent fare, such as On the Road starring Kristen Stewart, as well as older titles such as Hal Hartley’s Flirt. You can stream or download rentals (generally between $4 and $7), or purchase downloads ($20 for most titles).

4. Vimeo

Vimeo is moving past its roots as a YouTube alternative for user-generated content. In March the company launched Vimeo on Demand, allowing filmmakers to offer high-quality original content.

Some-girls

The offerings are still fairly slim, but the catalog got a recent boost with the feature Some Girl(s), a comedy adaptation of Neil LaBute’s play featuring Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. The movie, which made its debut at this year’s SXSW Festival, got a simultaneous June 28 release on Vimeo and a limited theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles.

Other titles include the environmental documentary Trashed, featuring Jeremy Irons, and the BAFTA-nominated feature I Am Nasrine. Depending on the title, you can rent or download movies, and prices vary.

Subscription Services

5. Think of Fandor

Think of Fandor as the indie alternative to Netflix. The service runs $10 a month after a free two-week trial and offers an interesting selection of titles, including the strange, disturbing, and utterly compelling Oscar-nominated Dogtooth from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos.

We were most intrigued by the documentary Brian Eno: The Man Who Fell to Earth. You’ll even find such campy fare as 1962’s The Day of the Triffids. Fandor also features essays about directors, genres, and film history.
