We are happy to announce that Meebo has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Google!  For more than seven years we’ve been helping publishers find deeper relationships with their users and to make their sites more social and engaging. Together with Google, we’re super jazzed to roll up our sleeves and get cracking on even bigger and better ways to help users and website owners alike.

Meebo has already raised $70 million in venture capital since it was founded in the year 2005 by Seth Sternberg, Elaine Wherry and Sandy Jen. Sternberg, who formerly helped IBM Corp. identify acquisition targets, served as Meebo’s CEO.

It is unclear whether Google will close the service with 250 million users. No one knows the amount of the purchase but is said to exceed $100 million . Meebo is one of the clients web messenger service which is most used on the Internet, has made great changes to try to become a social network but without much success.

Although Google has not said what they will do with the service, it would be good to seek alternatives to Meebo , after seeing what Google did with Picnik that hill after purchase.
