See this was as far as I know/Knew a legal copy of XP, I got system 2nd hand. Came with reinstall disk, OEM type I think you would call it. But No product key.
I did have to install new Hard drive, and it never asked for product key during install, but then I got the activation notice.
I found program to give me good key to pass Activation, but would not allow downloading of updates.
and as stated, “Microsoft genuine advantage diagnostic tool” would “Gig” me as invalid product key.
NOW SAYS “Validation Status= genuine!!
This will stay OK now Correct?

What I have been doing is when I restart computer, I just re-install license into registry.
Then I will run WGA diagnostic tool to verify.
I did read about denying ” system” access or permission to this one string in registry,but that did not seem to work either.
After I re install license, I am able to check for, and allow windows to check for and download up-dates.
Guess I can live with this, but would be nice to re start and have license stay installed.

You have a great mind for this issue of no validation but after doing method 2 it did enter in to the registry and I ran the WGA tool and it took the notification off the desk top but I still can not run updates. It is giving me the same message ” Enter a genuine Windows product key ” any suggestions as to my next step.
