As per my experience, FireDownload surely increase the downloading speed in Firefox. So, why not give it a try! There are reports on blocking download from some of the sites, so you may need to disable it in order to download fromt those sites.

Well, i use “Download Helper” FF plugin (to download flash videos like from YouTube) and it has a “Quick Download ” option that works just great!
